8 Day ALBA Emoting workshop

Dates: April 22-30 (with the 26th off)
Location: TH141

The workshop will be taught in four hour sessions daily, with one day off. The work is described as intimate, intense, and emotional. The workshop is limited to 12 participants.

ALBA Emoting: Alba Emoting was developed by neuroscientist Dr. Susana Bloch as a safe, purely physical alternative to emotion memory for releasing, maintaining, and controlling emotional states on stage.

Alba Emoting identifies six "basic" emotions from which all others derive. Each of the basic emotions, as well as emotional neutrality, has its own unique, identifiable set of bodily responses ("effector patterns") which are universal to all humans. By reproducing aspects of these patterns — breathing, posture, and facial expression — an actor can experience and express genuine, organic emotion at will, without the use of memory or images.

Instructor: Professor Nancy Loitz teaches directing at Wesleyan University in Illinois. Nancy received her MFA from the University of Minnesota. Nancy studied with Susana Bloch, and is one of the only certified instructors of ALBA emoting in North America. She has taught professional actors in Zurich, Switzerland; Milan, Italy; and in Chicago.

Due to limited space, interested students are asked to apply for a space in the workshop by contacting Kasey Dunn, and explaining why you would like to take the workshop.

The Chairs is a roller coaster of emotions!  The cast, Dawn A. Crysler and Machael Greves, have risen beautifully to the enormous challenge of this enigma of a play.  Laurie Boese crosses mediums moving from visual artist to the stage in his role as The Orator with tremendous success.

Be prepared to laugh out load - it's outrageous!  Be prepared to have shivers sent down your spine - it's absurd!

Most of all, be prepared to come see it this week!!!

Hello Department of Drama!

Lyndesfarne Theatre Projects is thrilled to announce our upcoming Season of theatre for 2010/2011 and we hope to see all of you and your students at the theatre.

We begin the year with the much anticipated Woman in Black, the  ghost terrifying story adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the novel by Susan Hill. It has been playing on London's West End for 22 seasons, soon to break the longest running Mousetrap by Agatha Christie. The play is set in a small Victorian playhouse, and we are very excited about transforming the Courthouse Theatre into such a space.  It is very much about theatre, and the ritual of storytelling, as we discover when a theatre manager is visited by an elderly gentlemen, a Mr. Arthur Kipps, who is seeking help in the art of storytelling, so that he can tell his story and in doing so, rid himself of the evil that has haunted him his entire life. Ric Reid plays Mr. Kipps and Jon Osbaldeston plays the theatre manager.  Emma Hillier will be making her Lyndesfarne debut as The Woman.

Dates: November 6th to 21st with a preview on the 5th.  There are matinees and evening shows begin at 7:30. Tickets are $15 for students and $25 for general admission.  HST is included in the ticket price.

Our second main stage of the year is Shakespeare's Villains by Steven Berkoff.  UK playwright, director, actor and international film star, Steven Berkoff has written a one-man tour de force featuring the best of the bard's villainy.  Part pedagogy, part stand-up, this exploration of seven of Shakespeare's most notorious baddies, including Hamlet as the villain wannabe, will have every student not only understanding but hooked on Shakespeare in 70 minutes!  Mr. Berkoff has performed this to audiences all around the world with the exception of Canada, and Lyndesfarne has been persuing the rights for over a year.  The good news came only a short time ago and so St. Catharines will host the Canadian premiere for this spectacular event. Shakespeare's Villains features Ric Reid and is directed by Kelly Daniels.

Finally, Young Company presents Animal Farm based on the novel by George Orwell. This year, SITI Company is coming to start off the training with a five-day intensive which will create the foundation of training for the year.  Kelly Daniels will continue the training along with Jon Osbaldeston as vocal coach.  The other piece of exciting news about this project is the very welcome addition of Matthew Therrien, almunus and composer from Brock's Department of Music.  Matt will be conducting the Young Company Orchestra as this production of Animal Farm comes complete with song and music.   Playing at The Mandeville Theatre, Animal Farm runs for 9 performances from April 26th to April 30th. Tickets are $10, teachers and chaperones are free.
-
Also wanted to let you all know that several Brock students and Drama Department Alumni benefitted from Lyndesfarne's outreach and educational programming as instructors and teaching assistants in several of our programs: Young Company, and Downtown Drama Drop In.  These include Tiffany Stull, Fede Holten Anderson, Amy Teetzel, Rox Chawaluk, Brandon Pachon, Shannon Lahaie, Christine Dief and Jesse Reimer Watts.  Brock students, Alex Kazam, Kaitlin Race, Jordin Hall, Shannon Lahaie, Aaron Berger, Matt Piper, Rachel Kelly, Jesse Reimer Watts, Nancy Kapadistrios, and Kasey Dunn, all participated in last year's To Kill a Mockingbird which played to almost 800 youth during the matinees and was the largest selling box office production in Lyndesfarne's five year history.  14 high schools came to see our production including our first Hamilton school - McNab Secondary.  We look forward to offering more teaching, performing, stage management and design positions to your students this upcoming year!

And last but not least...Lyndesfarne's Board has just approved plans for the Cathleen Ross Internship which is a paid internship to be awarded to one Brock Drama Graduate to spend a season with Lyndesfarne.  We will keep you posted on our development of this important and exciting program.

Thanks as always for your support!

A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD at the 2010 Toronto Fringe

DART student, Spencer Smith, along with a company of current DART
students and recently graduated DART students are taking part in this
year's Toronto Fringe Festival. The play is an original one-act
written by Spencer Smith, entitled "A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD" and
it is presented by WatersEdge Productions.

Below you'll find info on the SHOW & TICKETS & LOCATION:

THE SHOW:

Christopher is nothing special. Yet in a life filled with mentors,
sidekicks and damsels in distress, Christopher considers the role of a
hero as a single bullet passes through his head. This contemporary
tragedy questions what separates the hero from the villain? What vein
of action determines either extreme? What truths lie behind the
fleeting images that flash before our eyes?

With intense naturalism, "A Rush of Blood to the Head" has been
described as 'the next generation?s style of theatre'. Budding
playwright/dramaturg/director, Spencer Smith, combines the
sweet-nothings of everyday life with the idealized images one might
find in a comic book. Along with an original score inspired by the
music of Coldplay, Smith's postmodern one-act instantly hits every
nerve, in a show that is framed by the hip, rapid-fire rhythm of
today's youth culture.

Downtown St. Catharines launches Art City!

St. Catharines, Ontario, April 22, 2009 – On the first Friday night of each month, from May 1 through October 2, Downtown St. Catharines becomes Art City!. From 6 to 9 pm each evening, Downtown galleries, restaurants and merchants will be enlivened through art by hosting an exhibition or performance on their premises.

Art City! is a celebration of original artwork, installations, exhibitions, and performances presented through a partnership of the Niagara Artists’ Centre, the St. Catharines & Area Arts Council and the St. Catharines Downtown Association. Art City! will feature all forms of art, from the eclectic to the sublime. Event maps will be distributed through participating venues and they will also be available for download on all partner websites: www.nac.org, www.stcartscouncil.ca and www.stcathdowntown.com. The events are family-friendly and admission is free.

St. Catharines is Ontario’s original Art City! In 1975, art exhibitions and performances were held throughout the Downtown. Now thirty-four years later, engaging art experiences are popping up in the core.

On May 1, as part of the Art City! Launch, St. Catharines’ Charter House, home of the St. Catharines and Area Arts Council at 31 James Street, will be hosting a 16mm film installation by emerging contemporary visual artist Ryan Rivando. Stop by to check it out and for coffee, water, or information about Niagara’s artists and arts organizations.

The Niagara Artists’ Centre at 354 St. Paul Street, opens two exhibitions. Manifesto is a group exhibition in the Dennis Tourbin Members' Gallery. It celebrates International Worker's Day with a series of contemporary Manifestos, the historic meeting place of art and politics. In NAC's storefront space member Maggie Groat presents a video installation called: Displacement (How to cope with the weight of history), a two-part video document of performances that Maggie created illustrating her place outside her own First Nations Canadian identity.

The St. Catharines Downtown Association will be featuring local artist Laurie Boese. Laurie is an artist, arts educator, and the founder of Art Under Glass, and will be doing sidewalk chalk murals on each Art City! evening at 136 St. Paul St.

Participating galleries and businesses include: The Boot Shop, Cram Gallery, Elliott & Co., Fine Grind Café, Golden Horseshoe Tattoo, Hollywood Hair, Pan Café, The Red Hot Chili Pepper, Strega Café and many more.

Art City! is a celebration of the transformation of Downtown St. Catharines through arts and culture. Arts and culture are essential to building lively communities where people want to live, work and visit. In a new creative economy, arts and culture are essential to our community’s sustainable future. An exciting part of that future is the partnership of Brock University and the City of St. Catharines in the relocation of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and the creation of an associated public arts facility in the urban centre of Niagara. Art City! demonstrates how that future is already taking shape in a revitalized Downtown, where arts lovers, families and visitors can spend an exciting, fun and safe Friday evening.

The Niagara Artists’ Centre gratefully acknowledges funding by Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, City of St. Catharines, and Delta bingo players.

The St. Catharines and Area Arts Council gratefully acknowledges funding by the City of St. Catharines, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Ontario Arts Council.

"The Room" by Ann Snead~ A women rents out a room in her house, in order to make ends meet and perhaps to ease her loneliness. The pictures on the walls are all of strangers. Stranger still is what may lurk behind the walls.

"A Rush of Blood to the Head" by Spencer Smith ~ Held up at gun point – a young man’s life flashes before his eyes. Did he spend his time on earth as a hero or a coward? A dramatic journey exploring the true meaning of courage.

"Dead Air" by Jason Cadieux ~ A new play by a celebrated local playwright – Dead Air features three dark tails – intermingled and set against local backdrop if St. Catharines.
