Call for Artists: Spectacle Chocolat
Show date: Saturday August 28, 2010
12 p.m.-5 p.m., Port Dalhousie
Application Deadline: March 30, 2010
A Vaudevillian-style Chocolate Show
Spectacle Chocolat is set within a unique event called The Chocolate Race. The second annual event is part running race – part festival and definitely celebration of all things chocolate. The race takes place on Sunday August 29 and is more about fun – and eating chocolate – than competition. Last year’s attendance included 600 participants and approximately 400 supporters and spectators. Spectacle Chocolat, taking place the day before, is based on a similar theme. Much like running and chocolate, this Vaudevillian-style show featuring unusual to off-the-wall artistic interpretations of all things chocolate, is about pushing the boundaries of expression and possibility in a fun, entertaining, sometimes unexpected and downright playful way!
Theme & Sample Acts
Theme: Chocolate, Chocolat
Sample Acts: Chocolate juggler, Live chocolate painting demonstration set to music, Spoken word chocolate confession, “Sweet” poetry, Comedic Choir that incorporates truffles into their performance

NEW THIS YEAR - Theatre/Dance/Variety showcase this April 2010!
Hurray! There are opportunities for individuals or companies to perform in a one night only Variety Show at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre AND/OR to be a part of a Three Day Play Series at The Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre during the first weekend of the festival.
You can find everything you need to know about how to apply here: http://www.inthesoil.on.ca/apply.html
Scroll down to the bottom for all the details on The Variety Night Application and the Theatre/Dance Weekend! Application deadline is January 29, 2010.
detailed info:
In the Soil is now accepting applications for its second annual multi-disciplinary arts festival set to take root in downtown St. Catharines from April 15 and 24,2010. Artists from, or with a close connection to, the Niagara region are invited to apply for one of 60 showcasing opportunities in music, theatre, dance, film and visual arts.
New additions to the 2010 festival include a performing arts showcase opportunity for theatre and dance and a call for multimedia proposals for street-level installations in downtown St. Catharines.
In the Soil is also pleased to announce support from the Fresh Start Program to assist in bringing a local “Hot Ticket” artist to headline the Friday, April 23, 2010 main stage event at Centre for the Arts, Brock University together with three of the ‘jury’s top picks” from the festival. Fresh Start is made possible through funding from the Arts Presentation Canada Development Support Program offered by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Deb Slade, Director of Brock University’s Centre for the Arts says, “We are looking forward to hosting the Hot Ticket showcase event on April 23. If last year was any indication, the selection of artists will be very difficult given the talent and caliber of artists in our region.”
The seed for In the Soil was planted by a partnership that will bring BrockUniversity and downtown St. Catharines together to grow a home for the arts in Niagara. Partners include: Centre for the Arts, BrockUniversity, the St. Catharines & Area Arts Council, Suitcase in Point Theatre Company, Pulse Niagara, the Niagara Artists Centre and Yummy Recordings. In 2009, 175 artists shared the fruits of their artistic offerings as part of a week of specially programmed events. This year, a jury composed of seasoned professionals will once again select artists to participate in the late spring harvest.
Applications are available for download at www.inthesoil.on.ca and will close on January 29, 2010.
Some upcoming opportunities for senior DART students looking to collaborate and design:
Niagara Dance
DV will be designing for Niagara’s only professional dance company for a new creation choreographed to original music this upcoming June. Entitled Quintessence, the dance will be performed in the Sullivan Mahoney Theatre in the Courthouse, downtown, June 11th – 13th, 2010. Specific design opportunities will be had in the lighting design, and production stage management opportunities will be part of this creative collaboration. This could be a half credit course opportunity (DART 3P97).
LyndesfarneTheatre
In place of the postponed Woman in Black Lyndesfarne is programming a “lovely little show: Educating Rita , starring Rick and Kelly of Lyndesfarne. Kelly continues: “It allows for some wonderful potential for all kinds of things and is a, I think, brilliant play to be doing right now. . . . We would like to create a very simple set and would like to give the opportunity to design it to one of Brock's senior design students. This is a brilliant opportunity for a professional credit. There will be an honorarium depending on how we fare at the box office, but at this point we can offer only the experience.”
Pending further details, this could be a half credit course opportunity (DART 3P97).

Theatre Artists:
I'm writing specifically to you, as you are theatre artists who have experience with Site-Specific Theatre. Below is the information about UNHINGED. It's much like a Fringe Festival, but with a site-specific slant to it.
We are excited this year to coincide with IMPACT – The Multicultural Theatre Space’s International Theatre Festival and CAFKA (Contemporary Art’s Forum Kitchener and Area).
This promises to be the three most exciting weeks in the arts this area has seen.
The fee for an A) Plays - 200 - 40 mins, is $150.00 and $300.00 for a play 40 - 60 mins. Your group takes all the proceeds at the box office. Each play has at least four performances. We would love a play on a bus, we have a lake, we have amazing resources with the City of Kitchener. We have an amazing company.
Please, if you have any questions, ask away. Thanks so much.
Paddy Gillard-Bentley - Artistic Director for Flush Ink Productions
SUBMISSIONS FOR FLUSH INK PRODUCTION'S UNHINGED - Kitchener's Festival of Site-Specific Theatre
Sept 17 - 26 2009.
Similar to a Fringe Festival in it’s structure, UNHINGED has a different focus. Most of the festival will be Site-Specific Theatre & Bring Your Own Venue.
We are not just looking for theatre pieces, but will consider performance art, dance, film - basically live performance genres with multimedia/multi-art aspects. The plays/pieces will be chosen by a reading committee as the venues require some serious logistical considerations.
If you’re a company, and have a piece that you’ve already produced, bring it here.
If you’re a playwright and you have a piece you want to see ‘up’, find yourself a director(we may have some available from this end).
If you’re a director, and haven’t found that perfect venue for something you love, we might be it.
Located an hour west of Toronto, and an hour east of London, Kitchener is a mid-sized city where art is thriving everywhere. This is the festival’s first year, so we are starting off prudently. We are looking for 15 – 30 pieces.
EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: April 15 2008 – MIDNIGHT

• A minimum of 4 scheduled performances
• Two levels of plays/payment/admission (A: 20-40 min. B: 40-60 min.)

Subject: Walk a Mile in her Shoes
My name is Nadia Kowalchuk, I am a student intern for Gillian’s Place (formerly Women’s Place St. Catharine & North Niagara) and I am e-mailing you in regards to the walk a mile in HER shoes event in hopes that you and your drama students would be willing to volunteer.
Walk a Mile in HER Shoes is a symbolic gesture of men marching in female footwear to raise awareness and money on the issue of violence against women. This unique event sends the message that abuse is not just a woman’s issue but a community issue. Women and men must work together towards creating a violence-free world.
We were hoping to have your drama students volunteer on September 19th, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. for the walk a mile in HER shoes promotion at the Pen Centre. We would like them to ‘freeze’ in particular positions around the Pen Center to raise awareness for the event, which will take place October 4th, 2009. If you would like an example of ‘freezing’ please click the ‘YouTube’ link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6qWaJ-BG-k
By participating in this event, your school will publicly take a Stand on the issue of violence against women and their children. It will show you are willing to be partners with women in making the world a safer place for all mothers, sisters and daughters.
It is our hope that your drama department will participate in promoting the event. We are also sending out information packages to the high schools in the area to promote students and teachers to enter a team to walk a mile. This is our opportunity to lay the foundation for future generations to stand up to violence against women.
If you have any questions please visit www.walkamileinhershoes.ca or e-mail wendy@gilliansplace.com.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. If I may provide you with any other information please let me know.
